My Icky, Slimy Pirate. . .
Today’s Fortune: Keep up the good work. You will be rewarded.
That is a good fortune, because I have been working on a project for the last few days. Last Saturday, I got out my “Grow Your Own Pirate Adventure” set that Auntie Pam and Chip sent. September 19 is Talk Like A Pirate Day, and I wanted to make sure my pirate would be ready for the festivities.
Mom got out a big pitcher of water, and a clear glass for each of the adventure pieces. I have a pirate, a pirate ship, and a treasure chest.
The only piece that would stand up was the treasure chest. The pirate’s peg leg was much shorter than his good leg, and the ship kept falling over, too. Mom said these were starting to look as cheesy as sea monkeys. I’m not sure what she meant by that, because there’s no cheese in these at all. Just water and adventure set pieces.
The pirate stuff does not grow very fast. That’s probably why they give you a maze to work on the back of the package, so you don’t get as bored while you wait.
I was about to start working my maze when I saw a whole bunch of teeny-tiny words below the instructions. Mom says this is the “fine print”. Fine print is something they hope nobody will notice. At least not until after you have bought whatever they are selling.
I don’t understand why they would put all that stuff in fine print. I would think they would be proud to let people know that the pirate was going to be icky and slimy. Those are good qualities for a pirate, and I was happy to see that.
I wasn’t as happy to figure out that it will take up to 10 days to grow completely.
They should have given me more mazes.

Ahoy, Matey,
Slimy pirates? That is so cool. Boy, you get to have all the fun. But mom got me some pretty cool stuff for “Talk Like a Pirate Day.” She’s even letting me wear all the gear – well, ‘cept for the sword – so I can play pirates with my wooden parrot. We keep looking for treasures, but mom won’t let me have any of her jewelry. She said she would look for some pretend ones that I can play with. Then I can hide them and then go find them. Or maybe mom should hide them so it will take longer to find them.
G’day Matey! (What’s a matey?)
