Noah's Adventures,  People and Places

Dear John Deere……

Today’s Fortune: You are quiet, adaptable, and sensitive to others.

Today was not the funnest day ever, but I did not complain. I was just quiet and adaptable.

This morning, Mom went to see another person called “Client”. This one was different from the one she saw yesterday. They all seem to have the same name, and when I do get to go, I have to stay in the Suburban, so I never get to meet them. Staying in the Suburban is no fun at all.

When she was finally done with her meeting, Mom took me to a place called Lowe’s. They had great big John Deere tractors outside! I rode on one for a minute, but it was awfully windy, and I kept blowing off into the dirt.

When we went inside, they had a bunch more!!!  They also had lots of other really good stuff there.  Things like wood and pipe and wires and glue and stuff to build all kinds of things.

Mom talked to the people at the front of the store.  They were called the “Service Desk”.  We learned a good lesson when we got in trouble for me hugging the Hello Kitty, so Mom asked if we could take a picture of me on one of the tractors.   They did not seem very friendly.  They said it would be okay, but only if it was just one picture.   That meant that Mom could not get any pictures of me playing with power tools, which would have been nice.  But since I am sensitive to others, I decided that one John Deere tractor picture would be fine.  I need to write to John Deere and tell him how much I like his tractors.

When we got home, Mom had lots of stuff to do, so I played Farm.  Mom got some really good sheeps from one of her Ravelry friends, and she said I could play with them.  I was very careful not to run over them with my John Deere tractor, because I am sensitive to others, even when they are sheeps.

When I got tired of playing Farm, I asked Mom what else I could do.  She suggested that I tell people about one of the books I am reading.  She said this was called a “Book Review”, and that it was very similar to critiquing a restaurant, but without the good food.  She said people get paid to do book reviews sometimes, too.  There are a lot of cool jobs to choose from, it seems.

So this will be my very first Book Review.  The book I am reviewing today is called Sock Monkeys: (200 out of 1,863). It is a book about sock monkeys. It is a good book to read, because it has mostly pictures. The pictures are all in black and white, and they are all of sock monkeys. There are 200 monkeys featured in the book, and they all come from one man’s collection. His name is Ron Warren. He has 1,863 sock monkeys. We don’t have nearly that many, which is good, because there would not be room for all of us, and nobody would get much attention.

There are some stories written about some of the sock monkeys in the boook, but when I read them, they did not seem much more interesting than what happens to me around here, and my pictures are all in color. The pictures in this book were taken by a man named Arne Svenson. They are very good pictures, but they are all in black and white. I wanted to show you some of the pictures, but Mom said that might be something called “copyright infringement”. That means that all of the pictures belong to the man that took them, and it is not good to show them without his permission. I don’t know how to get in touch with him, but since I am sensitive to others, I will only show the cover, because they show that on Amazon.com, which is where books come from.

It is a very good book, and I highly recommend it.  Amazon uses five stars instead of four to rate stuff.  I think I will use pezzes, so people can tell the difference between my restaurant reviews and my book reviews.

I give this book 4 1/2 pezzes!!  (Amazon gave it 4 1/2 stars, so I’m going with their rating.)  I think it would get 5 pezzes if the pictures were in color.

I feel very sorry for the other 1,663 monkeys who did not get their pictures in the book.  I wonder why they didn’t make it.  Maybe it’s because they were quiet, adaptable, and sensitive to others, and they just got overlooked.

I am all of those things, and yet I never get overlooked. I wonder why?

Today’s Vocabulary Words: Service Desk,  book review, copyright infringement.

    Hi Noah,

I like your tractor. Those people at Lowe’s are no fun. They should have let you play with the tools too.

I have that “Sock Monkeys” book. Do you know that the same guy has a 12 month calendar every year which features some of the monkeys in that book? The pictures are in color too!

There’s a story in the “Sock Monkeys” book called “Sewn Under a Bad Sign” by Penn Jillette. He also wrote a novel called “Sock” about his sock monkey Dickie. Laura has this book, but she hasn’t read it yet.

    Regards,
    Big Monkey

    Hi, Big Monkey!

I have not seen that calendar. Mom has been nagging Dad for 4 years to do a sock monkey calendar. Ours will be in color, though, if he ever does one. I read Penn Jillette’s story in the book. I thought it was pretty good. I will have to see if Mom can get the other book. It sounds good. We are always looking for good sock monkey stories. Love, Noah
